European Technology Platforms ARTEMIS and ENIAC: JTI Information Day:
EFPC are assisting in the organisation of the "ARTEMIS and ENIAC JTI Information Day" to be held in Brussels on 4 April 2008.
ARTEMIS is concerned with maintaining European strengths in the area of embedded computing systems; ENIAC is concerned with all Nano-electronics technology (including power devices, RF, MEMS, sensors, materials, equipment).
The overall budget of the ARTEMIS initiative is €2.5 billion over seven years with around 55% coming from industry. In short, each € contributed by the Commission will leverage 6 € of research effort. Overall, the ICT program is expecting to contribute €410 million during the seven years, starting with €41.5 million in 2008.
For ENIAC the overall budget is close to €3 billion over seven years and the ICT program is expecting to contribute €440 million during the seven years, starting with €41.5 million in 2008.
It is expected that the first Call for proposals for both initiatives will be launched mid-April 2008 and in order to inform the research communities about the possibilities of both these Calls the EPISTEP ETI Project is hosting a free information day in Brussels. This information day is organised in close collaboration with the European Commission and the 2 industrial associations ARTEMISIA and AENEAS. It will feature speakers from the Commission, ARTEMISIA/AENEAS and the 2 interim Executive Directors from the ARTEMIS and ENIAC Joint Undertakings.
The event will start at 09:30, and will finish around 17:00 on Friday 4th April 2008.
The day will include parallel sequential sessions by JTI and topic including selected brief presentations by leading organisations regarding their views/ideas for project subjects. It is also planned to include brief presentations by topic by interested participants including SMEs.
Attendees will be informed of the emerging programme priorities and how to engage in projects.

Many of the EPISTEP partners are offering to financially support SME participation (travel costs) at the event. You will receive information on whether and how you can benefit from this support after you send in your registration form.

Enterprise Europe Network (EEN):
On the 7th of February the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) was launched; a new and powerful European support network for enterprises. This takes over from the IRCs and Euro Info Centres, offering a one-stop service to assist especially small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop their full potential and innovative capacity. The Enterprise Europe Network includes more than 500 contact points for entrepreneurs in Europe.
Enterprise Europe Network partners will organise up to 1,000 local events and workshops every year aimed at SMEs across Europe. These events and workshops will cover all aspects of competitiveness and innovation policy, focusing on themes such as:
o SME financing;
o SME policy;
o e-business skills;
o innovation policy;
o IPR use and enforcement;
o health and safety at work;
o public procurement, including “innovation-friendly procurement”;
o lifelong learning for entrepreneurs.

2007 European Innovation Scoreboard:
The 2007 European Innovation Scoreboard was published on 14 February 2008. It provides a comparative assessment of innovation performance across EU Member States and with major innovating countries worldwide, together with new analysis on innovation in services, on socio-economic factors influencing innovation, on innovation efficiency and on non-R&D innovation. There is also a press release and an interactive tool to view countries' performance in different areas.
PRO INNO Europe:
PRO INNO Europe is a new initiative of Directorate General Enterprise and Industry which aims to become the focal point for innovation policy analysis, learning and development in Europe, with the view to learning from the best and contributing to the development of new and better innovation policies in Europe.
E-Government and Social Inclusion: Barriers, Opportunities and Future Direction:
The use of e-government services depends on various factors such as the ease of use, proficiency, accessibility and civic engagement. There are several disadvantaged groups that are less likely to use these services, including the elderly, disabled persons, migrants and low socio-economic status groups (LSGs). The pace at which different countries deploy e-Government services, including measures taken to include LSGs, varies considerably.
ELOST is a project whose aim is to increase e-Government readiness by and civic engagement among low socio-economic status groups (LSGs) through appropriate policy measures (including future R&D). The aim of this workshop is two-fold: 1) to present the findings of the ELOST project and its policy recommendations for improving e-Government use among LSGs, and 2) to exchange knowledge about and experiences with e-Government and tools that reduce the digital divide.
ELOST is holding an event called “E-Government and Social Inclusion: Barriers, Opportunities and Future Direction” in Brussels Belgium.
The workshop is free to attend and aims to initiate a comprehensive debate on policies for increasing e-participation among LSGs and the future direction for inclusive and improved e-Government for all in form of a panel discussion.
